Chapter 20

Our stomachs pleasantly full, Indigo and I returned to the apartment, and once again I couldn’t help but notice her reluctance to go home in spite of the late hour.

“I’m sure Miranda is waiting for you, isn’t she?” I dropped my jacket on the coat rack and lifted the vial from Desmond, setting it down on the nearby kitchen counter.

“She’s got art class tonight, actually.”

“Art class? I didn’t realize she was taking an art class.”

“Yeah.” Indigo offered a smile that lacked its normal warmth. “Started a few weeks ago. Trying to find a hobby to latch onto, you know? Something to replace the— well— you know. The drugs.”

“Sounds like a smart idea.”

“I’ll go home soon,” Indigo promised, but pulled a pair of glasses from the cupboard and filled one with vodka, the other with whiskey. “You want a smoke?”

“Maybe in a few minutes,” I called out over my shoulder, walking into the hallway on the other side of the living room. “I need to get something out of my office.” Glasses clattered in the kitchen as Indigo prepared our two drinks and the words Desmond whispered into my ear echoed within the confines of my brain like shouts into the grand canyon.

Reaching my office, I punched in the combination and opened the door, stepping into my small pocket of reality still entrenched within the supernatural. Stepping through the various display cases of enchanted knives and the bookshelves lining the walls, I approached my desk, set against the far wall beneath an old pool cue and various other wall decorations that might have looked almost homey if not for the deadly weapons encased in acrylic all around them.

Walking around my desk, I bent low and opened a drawer, reaching inside and removing a sheathed knife that had rested within and set it on top of the desk.

“You have a bunch of those spare knives kicking around?” Indigo stood in the opened frame of the door, holding my glass of whiskey in her hands.

“A bunch might be overstating it, but I’ve gathered a few extras over the years.” I lifted the sheathed blade and tucked it into my waistband, then made my way around the perimeter of the room, checked the books in one of the bookshelves and slipped one free, carrying it with me. Indigo offered me the whiskey and I accepted
